Why is there no biological purpose for female orgasm?

pemchurch.caThe biological purpose for male orgasm is simple, when men ejaculate, it serves as a sperm delivery system. The tense, satisfying feeling of male ejaculation is soothing, enjoyable and men look forward to repeating it. Marvin Gay in his 1982 classic described it as ‘sexual healing’, a sickness brought about by nature whose biological purpose is to release spermatozoa for procreation. The man ejaculates all the time he has sex. On the other hand, the female orgasm does not release an ‘egg’ from the ovary. Indeed, it has no direct correlation to fertility, female orgasm isn’t required for a woman to become pregnant. A significant percentage of women with children have never experienced orgasm and those who do, do not experience orgasm all the time they have sex.

So what biological purpose does the female orgasm serve?

Some argue in line with the Darwinian evolution train of thought that since female orgasm is difficult to achieve, it may well be that the female sex over the years evolved to help choose mates who are patient, caring and loving since these traits are needed in a man if he is to help his woman achieve orgasm. This argument is only applicable to humans as other primates still use brute force and aggression to attract women.

Some argue differently, they propose that female orgasm has nothing to do with evolution. They posit that female orgasm enhances fertility. Those in this camp claim to have conducted studies that show that during female orgasm, the cervix descends and sucks up spermatozoa hence aiding fertilization. However, there isn’t enough scientific evidence to suggest that women that experience orgasm more are more fertile than those that do not.

What do we know?

It is a well-known fact that tender-loving care, cuddling, and prolonged sex releases the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin (produced in the brain) makes us develop ‘a connection’, ‘an affection’, and ‘an attachment’ to a person. It is the number one ‘love charm’, the reason you are so in love. Without this hormone, humans especially males are likely to lack trust, commitment, and loyalty in a relationship and will most likely go after other women.image source cyberschoolgroup

So while the jury is still not yet out on this one, it is safe to say that, female orgasm because it is enjoyable encourages women to have sex for non-reproductive purposes. This then stimulates the secretion of oxytocin which makes the man remain as a loving, caring husband to his wife and father to his children. A stable home, thanks to Oxytocin!

This is so, especially because we are the only animals that have sex for non-reproductive purposes. Humans have too much sex, in fact by animal standards humans are sex maniacs! But humans also have love, commitment, stable homes and I think we owe this to oxytocin, oxytocin from frequent sex, frequent sex promoted by female orgasm!
